 Moorcroft Equine Rehabilitation Centre is a registered charity and our mission is to re-school and rehabilitate former racehorses that can then have a real chance at a second career.  We also help with short-term schooling and rehabilitation for ALL horses , so if you need help with equine rehabilitation then please do contact Mary on 07929 666408 for a chat about your requirements.


At the Centre in Slinfold, West Sussex, we are passionate about achieving a sound, comfortable and pain-free horse to ride and enjoy. Every thing we do is about enhancing the rider's and the horse's confidence and understanding in order to achieve that goal.


So much is NOT understood and horses suffer, and riders lose confidence - neither of these is a good thing.


We have many years experience at rehabilitating damaged ex-racehorses and were formerly known as Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre. However, we are now delighted to be able to help all breeds who need help moving forward with a better, more sound and more thriving life.

How We Can Help

We can help with the following:
  • Backing your young horse with respect and care (not 'breaking' it!)  
  • Re-backing your young or older horse  
  • Getting your horse back to work after surgery, time off or a bout of lameness 
  • Assessing lameness and discomfort from the rider's point of view  
  • Improving rider's confidence in themselves and their riding
  • Any help with schooling to enhance strength and soundness  
  • Development of your horse's muscles and back

All proceeds from the courses go towards helping the horses at the charity so we really do appreciate your support.

We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all the kind and generous people who supported us and helped contribute to our brand new Cyclo-ssage Equine Massage System rug. We are finding it incredibly helpful in so many ways. Here are a couple of our lovely residents showing some of the benefits of the rug so far… Herbie is an arthritic cob who has tightness throughout his entire body. This photo demonstrates him long-reining comfortably, thanks to the benefits of the Cyclo-ssage which is able to fully stretch over his neck and back. Percy is an ex-racehorse with a challenging past and many diagnosed issues that we are managing with veterinary help. He carries a lot of tension. The @cyclossageequinemassagesystem has enabled him to feel more comfortable in his body and more relaxed both in and out of the stable, falling asleep as soon as we put it on him! #equinehealth #equinemassage #equinerehab #equinemassagetherapy

Two horses benefitted from the use of a cyclo-ssage unit where they received a treatment for half an hour. It is designed to relieve tightness and discomfort in the body and, as you can see from the photo below, it covers all major muscle groups and areas of the horse that can get tight and sore. Mary, Niamh and Tilly, the Team at the centre really want to obtain one of these units so we can go on helping each horse that comes our way. We need to raise £5,000 and we would really welcome your help to raise this. ANYTHING you can offer will help us achieve this. This unit will go on healing and helping for many years so we feel it is money well worth investing. Please give generously and thank you so much for your support. This is a fun packed hands on workshop to identify and observe the Moorcroft horses self-select hedgerow and local plant material and benefit from their natural goodness. Experience making simple topical remedies for your own horses, ponies and donkeys, identify local herbs and plants from Elizabeth’s equine herb apothecary and how culinary herbs can help your equine friends physically, emotionally and mentally. Elizabeth will be sharing with you valuable tips on equine holistic healthcare for seniors, competition and retired equines: ▻ How to identify pick and harvest herbs/plants this time of the year· ▻ Drying and storing herbage for the winter months ▻ Medicinal infused honeys you can make ▻ How to make a topical fly spray ▻ Identify which natural food compounds offer electrolytes and hydration ▻ Identify which herbs you can use under FEI competition rules This is always a fun and informative workshop and the horses love the free buffet! ? Herbie has been with us for some time as he has, like many horses, some low level lameness issues both behind and in front. Our main focus recently has been to address his navicular/coffin joint problems as he has intermittent lameness from these joints. We are very careful with the work we do, and we avoid lots of trotting on the roads or hard ground as this will inevitably aggravate these conditions. Herbie goes on quiet hacks, and he enjoys his schooling which strengthens him and keeps him supple and helps him to use and strengthen his back well. He also benefits from good quality long-reining. We are thrilled that after 3 PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments for this lovely cob, he has achieved soundness and is working so much more comfortably. It is always good to find something that works for each horse so that progress can occur. These treatments have been administered at the centre by a company led by Janet Hadfield called Advanced Biologics Research and Moorcroft is very glad that we have found this option for some of our lame horses. When horses have a lameness in front it is very important to ensure that all hind leg joints and the sacro-iliac joint are taken great care of as a weakness behind that is not treated, will increase the pressure and concussion on both front feet, negating the treatment given there with disappointing results. In other words, at the centre, we have to look at the whole horse to achieve good results. Our excellent skilful Vet Vasco Lopez MRCVS Equine Veterinary Performance Ltd - UK has helped us with many problems here at the centre in Slinfold. We are very pleased to have his help.
