Fascinating to hear the benefits of the different hedgerow plants and herbs to help the horses heal and self-medicate. Elizabeth Whiter is raising money for our charity by holding a Spring Hedgerow Herb/Tree Equine Healing workshop on 18 June from 7-9pm. This is a fun packed hands on workshop to identify and observe the Moorcroft horses self-select hedgerow and local plant material and benefit from their natural goodness. Experience making simple topical remedies for your own horses, ponies and donkeys, identify local herbs and plants from Elizabeth’s equine herb apothecary and how culinary herbs can help your equine friends physically, emotionally and mentally. Respect This word is defined as ‘admiration’, ‘high regard’, ‘esteem’ and all animals deserve this as a minimum at all times. Horses are vulnerable to abuse and misunderstanding. Respect means due regard for their feelings both mental and physical. We, as professionals are particularly committed to horses and must act as advocates for the horses in all that we do. We must work to ensure that we do not work against the horse’s nature and we therefore must understand their natural environment. All we have to do, is to continue to stand up for horse friendly training with all our might, to teach and practice care and understanding and training that enhances soundness and good health both mental and physical and thus stand up for our horses and our sport. I believe horses love to be ridden and do things with their lives, but this needs respect and more understanding when they are struggling. Forceful and abusive training methods must be eradicated. Horses will put up with them. They have no choice. We do. We should all work more together and support each other to achieve this very worthwhile goal.

Herbie has been with us for some time as he has, like many horses, some low level lameness issues both behind and in front. Our main focus recently has been to address his navicular/coffin joint problems as he has intermittent lameness from these joints. We are very careful with the work we do, and we avoid lots of trotting on the roads or hard ground as this will inevitably aggravate these conditions. Herbie goes on quiet hacks, and he enjoys his schooling which strengthens him and keeps him supple and helps him to use and strengthen his back well. He also benefits from good quality long-reining. We are thrilled that after 3 PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments for this lovely cob, he has achieved soundness and is working so much more comfortably. It is always good to find something that works for each horse so that progress can occur. These treatments have been administered at the centre by a company led by Janet Hadfield called Advanced Biologics Research and Moorcroft is very glad that we have found this option for some of our lame horses. When horses have a lameness in front it is very important to ensure that all hind leg joints and the sacro-iliac joint are taken great care of as a weakness behind that is not treated, will increase the pressure and concussion on both front feet, negating the treatment given there with disappointing results. In other words, at the centre, we have to look at the whole horse to achieve good results. Our excellent skilful Vet Vasco Lopez MRCVS Equine Veterinary Performance Ltd - UK has helped us with many problems here at the centre in Slinfold. We are very pleased to have his help. At the centre we are backing young horses with respect. It is a very important time in a horse's development and soundness and comfort is key. The strengthening work on the long-reins really builds a good foundation and gives great feedback to the person long-reining. Safety is important when backing for all and confidence therefore develops. It should not be a stress. It is the horse’s first introduction to work so it should be a positive one. We at Moorcroft wish to say a huge THANK YOU to the good people at the Elise Pilkington Trust who have generously supported our very much needed Lower Yard Development this year. The generous and worthwhile trust has helped this charity in the past and we are very lucky to have received a further financial gift which has really helped us. The rebuild of this yard now means we can help many more horses back to health and soundness through our rehabilitation programme here. Otherwise, we may have had to turn them down which we would not have wanted to do. The new build was professionally provided by Olson Timber Buildings from Kent at a very generous cost to this charity and we are thrilled with the result as we have a much more robust and long-lasting stable block in order to keep these vulnerable horses safe for the winter whilst they are in for longer than they are in the summer months. THANK YOU again for this very generous gift which we really value, and which enables us to continue doing our work here at the centre.
